When you write in
It helps to include:
- What you were doing, and what happened instead.
- Which browser and device you were using.
- Whether you were signed in.
Please don’t paste writing you’d rather keep private. A short description is usually enough.
Keeping your writing safe
- Without an account, your writing lives only in this browser on this device. Clearing your browser’s data or using private browsing can remove it.
- Export anything you want to keep: Markdown, or a full project file that keeps the subtext and notes. You can import a project file later.
- If you sign in, documents you choose to sync are kept with your account and available wherever you sign in. Documents you don’t sync stay on the device.
Common questions
I can’t sign in.
You can sign in with Google, or with a code sent to your email. Google sign-in takes you to Google and back; if you come back signed out, check that your browser isn’t blocking cookies for this site, then try again. If the email code doesn’t arrive, check your spam folder.
A document isn’t appearing on my other device.
Only documents you’ve chosen to sync travel with your account. On the device where you wrote it, check that Sync this document is on in the document’s settings, and that you’re signed in to the same account on both. Groups and pins stay on each device, so a synced document arrives ungrouped.
I see a document named “… — another version”.
That document was changed on two devices. The version in your account won, and this device’s edits were saved as a separate document so nothing is lost. It stays only on this device unless you choose to sync it.
The AI says my key wasn’t accepted.
Check the key in Settings → AI, and that it’s from the provider you selected (Anthropic, OpenAI or OpenRouter). Keys are stored only in your browser, so each browser needs its own.
How do I delete my account?
In Settings → Account, choose Delete account. It asks first, then removes your account and every synced document. The documents in that browser stay on your device. You can also email info@editing.help.
Subtextual AI
What is Subtextual AI?
An optional subscription, $5 a month, tax included, with AI built in: no key to find, nothing to set up. It uses Anthropic’s Claude Haiku 5.5 and includes enough for everyday writing. Subtextual stays free without it, and your own key still works. You can subscribe from outside the US: Subtextual AI is sold through Link, Stripe’s reseller, which handles sales tax or VAT for your country. The writing app itself is free everywhere.
How do I subscribe?
Sign in, open Settings → AI, choose Subtextual AI, then Subscribe…. Payment happens on Stripe’s secure checkout, by card, Apple Pay or Google Pay.
What will I see on my statement?
Charges for Subtextual AI appear as SUBTEXTUAL. Receipts come from Stripe by email.
How do I cancel?
Manage… in Settings → AI (or in Settings → Account) opens Stripe’s billing portal, where you can cancel, change your card or download receipts. AI answers keep working until the end of the period you’ve paid for.
I reached the month’s limit.
AI answers pause until the allowance renews on your next billing date. Your writing and everything else keep working, and you can switch to your own key in Settings → AI at any time.
Can I get a refund?
Yes, within 14 days of any charge, no questions asked. See the refund policy.
